Facility Mailing and Service Information
TDCJ uses a statewide digital-mail system for all units. General personal correspondence is sent to the Digital Mail Processing Center, scanned, and delivered to the inmate's secure tablet; inmates without a tablet receive printed copies.
The envelope should identify the inmate by commitment full name and TDCJ number and should include the current unit of assignment. Written correspondence, greeting cards and drawings are accepted for scanning. All correspondence remains subject to inspection and rejection under TDCJ policy.
Legal, media and special correspondence are sent directly to the unit.

Personal photos are accepted through the TDCJ Digital Mail Processing Center and are scanned in color for delivery to the inmate's tablet. TDCJ's correspondence policy allows photographs to be inspected and rejected when their content violates policy.
Examples of prohibited content include sexually explicit images and altered photos that conceal or hide a person's face in a way that prevents identification. Other correspondence-security restrictions also apply.
TDCJ's current digital-mail FAQ does not state a general numeric photo limit for all units.

Books, magazines and other publications are not sent to the Digital Mail Processing Center; they are sent to the inmate's unit of assignment. TDCJ states that publications should be sent directly by an authorized source such as a publisher, publication supplier or bookstore.
Effective April 1, 2026, books mailed to TDCJ inmates must be new and softback; hardback and used books are not accepted under the revised statewide book policy.
Individuals generally may not mail ordinary packages to inmates. Stationery may not be mailed to inmates and instead must be obtained through approved TDCJ channels.
