Facility Mailing and Service Information

Individuals may contact California state-prison incarcerated people by U.S. mail. Incoming letters are opened and inspected for contraband and then forwarded to the incarcerated person.

CDCR recommends including the incarcerated person's full name, CDCR Number, institution name, and the correct P.O. Box/housing address. Because many institutions use housing-specific P.O. Boxes, confirm the person's current location and housing before mailing.

CDCR guidance states that first-class mail may include photographs, but Polaroid photographs are not accepted. Photographs remain subject to inspection, content rules and personal-property restrictions.

The statewide guidance reviewed does not publish one numeric photo limit that applies to every institution, so check local institution requirements if sending a large number of photographs.

CDCR guidance states that books must be soft cover and sent directly from a departmentally approved book distributor, bookstore or publisher.

Personal property packages must be sent by an approved vendor; individuals generally may not mail ordinary property packages directly. Package privileges and frequency depend on the incarcerated person's privilege group and current rules.

CDCR provides approved methods for sending funds to an incarcerated person. Before sending funds, confirm the incarcerated person's full name, CDCR Number and current institution.

When a facility publishes a separate money-order address, use that address rather than the general inmate correspondence address. Electronic deposit methods may also be available through CDCR-approved services.

Adult visitors must be approved before visiting. CDCR uses the CDCR Form 106 Visiting Questionnaire process. The incarcerated person normally sends the form to the prospective visitor, and the completed application is returned to the institution for review.

After approval, review the institution's current visiting status and scheduling requirements before traveling. Visiting can be modified or suspended because of emergencies or institution operations.

How to Address Your Letter

Before mailing, verify the incarcerated person's current institution and CDCR Number using California Incarcerated Records and Information Search (CIRIS).

CDCR recommends that the envelope include:
- Incarcerated person's full name
- CDCR Number
- Institution name
- Correct P.O. Box / housing address when applicable
- City, CA ZIP

Many California institutions use different inmate P.O. Boxes for different facilities or housing areas. Use the facility-specific mailing address shown on this page and confirm the current housing when needed.
